Janine Murphy is a mother of four
children ranging in age from 15 to 26 and has resided in Brisbane for
over 40 years, with the last 24 in Brighton and Bald Hills. She has
a strong sense of community and has provided home help to the aged,
managed her sons’ soccer teams and assisted in various school
activities. Organisation and participation of community awareness
raising campaigns and voluntary work has been a strong focus. These
have included participating in Amnesty International campaigns,
supporting Indigenous struggles through the Sandgate Reconciliation
Group and providing assistance for refugee families through the
Romero Centre.
Concern for the social equity and the environment led Janine to join the Greens in 2003. “The Greens provide policies that are forward thinking, practical and socially responsible. If we are really serious about the future of our planet, and ultimately our quality of life and that of our children, then we really need to make positive changes in how we live”.
This is particularly pertinent to the Bracken Ridge Ward as it is one of the fastest growing communities in Brisbane. Janine believes that the intensive residential development we are experiencing needs to be managed better than it is at present. Local Green leadership will ensure that good planning and extensive community consultation are pursued. “By voting Green, you can be assured that we will reduce the environmental footprint we leave while ensuring that our community does not become disconnected due to rapid impersonal growth”.
Janine’s priorities for the Bracken Ridge Ward are to:
Protect green space
Ensure that all future development
follows strict standards and benefits the community.
Promote green technology and
buildings.
Encourage community involvement
Develop a community that provides
extensive services and space for families, youths and the aged.
Improve public transport,
particularly to the trains.
Extend the bikeways.
Support local businesses.
Currently,
Janine is working as a teacher on the Redcliffe Peninsula and
completing her Masters in Studies of Religion. She is also
co-convenor for the Sandgate Greens. Janine enjoys coaching a
debating team, reading, gardening, traveling and exploring the unique
green spaces in and around Brisbane..
I am a local person dedicated to working with the people in the community to build a better quality of life for all stakeholders.
I will put
the human dimension back into development by creating a green
neighbourhood with character that meets the needs of the community
while minimizing the impact on the environment.
I will
protect the environment by making public transport and the
needs of pedestrians and cyclists a priority.
I will
push for affordable housing to meet local needs;
I will protect our local heritage,
green space and wildlife from unsustainable development.
I actively support small,
locally-owned businesses. All of these help keep the community's
wealth circulating within the local community, create employment
locally and promote greater self-reliance.
