Council must commence design and construction of a City Cat Terminal at the Teneriffe Ferry stop immediately, rather than waiting years for a stop to be built at the Newstead River Park.
Greens’ candidate for Hamilton, Tristan Peach, has submitted a petition for a long overdue City Cat terminal to be built at the Teneriffe Ferry stop.
“Council have stalled for more than 10 years on this issue and it is time for action,” said Mr Peach.
The first submission sent to Council’s Public Transport Chairperson contains 110 signatures, and more are on the way.
Mr Peach is urging Council to begin construction on the terminal immediately, rather than waiting years for one to be constructed at Newstead Riverpark.
“People are sick of waiting. They are supporting my proposal because they’ve been waiting since 1997 for this terminal to be built,” said Mr Peach.
Mr Peach believes a terminal at Teneriffe ferry stop is the best place due to its central location between new and existing development.
“It would also form a public transport hub by linking with the cross-river ferry and bus services (including the 199 Buz) that stop at the end of Commercial road,” said Mr Peach.
The terminal would cost $2-3 million dollars and should initially be funded by Council.
Contributions to this public infrastructure would later be levied from the developers of Riverpark, who would benefit greatly from it.
“I am worried that Labor and Liberal are not prepared to use a small amount of public money to build essential public transport infrastructure. To me it shows a real lack of commitment,” said Mr Peach.
An upgrade to the terminal is also essential to make it accessible for people in wheelchairs.
The current ramp to the ferry excludes wheelchair users and the 199 Buz service rarely has low-floor, wheelchair accessible buses.
“The quality of a transport system can be measured by how its treats its most vulnerable users,” said Mr Peach, “and our system often neglects the needs of people in wheelchairs, children and pedestrians.”
