24 February 2008 Greens install example light rail stop at "Trammies Corner" Paddington
The Greens are the only party with a credible transport plan to reduce congestion, slash greenhouse gas emissions and improve access in West Brisbane.
While Liberal and Labor plan to pump more traffic into the west from Hale Street Bridge, the Greens' transport plan will reduce traffic and improve neighbourhood amenity.
The centre piece of their plan for the west is the "Western Line" a light rail service running high frequency services from Roma Street to Kenmore. This would connect with a cross-city light rail line from Indooroopilly to Dutton Park, via the University of Queensland.
Buses and cycle paths would feed people into the service from surrounding areas.
While the plan shows light rail using the heavy rail tracks from Roma Street to Toowong, members of the public have suggested Milton Road and or Waterworks Rd with tidal traffic flow should be other options.
Costed at $130-385 million for 11km, it is far more cost effective than the Northern Link road tunnel which will cost approximately $500 million per km.
While Labor and Liberal beg the Feds to fund the northern link tunnel from Hale Street to Toowong, the Greens would be asking for them to instead help fund a light rail corridor for west Brisbane.
A passenger traveling by Light Rail creates only 1% of the greenhouse gas emissions created by a single occupant driver of a medium car. (AGO figures comparing buses to cars)
Residents of western wards have a clear choice at the election: The Greens' cost-effective plan for reduced traffic and better public transport, or Labor and Liberal's expensive plan for exhaust stacks, massive land resumptions and increased traffic created by Northern Link.
