Brisbane City Council - Bringing High Rise Development to Your Community
First there was the clearing of the Highgate Hill Gully, the last remaining riverine forest in the areas, for development. Then there was the West End Woolloongabba Local Plan which gives the Council the option of allowing high rise development along the river at West End up to 12 storeys. Then there was the Hale Street Link which will dump enormous amounts of traffic into the suburbs of South Brisbane, West End, Highgate Hill and Dutton Park. All these decisions were made with the support of both Liberal and Labor parties in Council.
Now we have the draft Kurilpa Plan, also being supported by both Labor and Liberal. This plan covers the area bordered by Melbourne and Peel Streets and Montague and Boundary Roads. It allows for commercial and residential buildings up to 25 storeys in height and these will adjoin existing residences in South Brisbane and West End. This will put enormous pressure on the whole area to accept high rise development and will bring the CBD right into West End, damaging this unique community.
Both Labor and Liberal parties are committed to these policies for the inner southern suburbs.
Only the Greens will fight to preserve the vibrant nature of these local communities.
