Brisbane activist Tristan Peach has announced that he will be running as the Greens' Candidate for the Hamilton Ward in the upcoming Brisbane City Council elections and has ambitions to be Council's Transport Chairperson.
Mr Peach’s main priority as a Councillor would be listening to and implementing the ideas of people in the Hamilton Ward and encouraging more people to become actively involved in local decision-making. He will demonstrate his commitment to citizen participation during the election campaign by discussing local and city-wide issues with as many people as possible.
"The Hamilton Ward is full of capable, intelligent and influential people who I am keen to meet over the next three months and would be honoured to represent as a Councillor. If people want to have a positive influence on the future of their ward and our city then I am the candidate that can help them do this,” said Mr Peach.
Mr Peach, who is a public transport campaigner and town planning tutor, has been active in the Hamilton Ward defending residents from the destructive Airport Link car tunnel, while Liberal and Labor have supported the useless demolition of houses, parkland and business that will occur as a result of the project. “I was disappointed that the Liberal Councillor and previous Labor candidate for this ward supported the congestion and community destruction that would be caused by Airport Link and ignored better solutions that the community had put forward,” said Mr Peach.
During January Mr Peach will be gathering information and consulting people, business and organisations. During February and March he will be releasing detailed policies and promoting these in the ward. As well as more community participation in decision-making Mr Peach’s policy interests include local business development, parkland improvement and better transport initiatives.
Mr Peach was drawn to politics after observing and trying to influence the short sighted, ignorant and counter-productive decisions made by the Labor/Liberal Council administration over the past 4 years. “I have been disappointed with their failure to adequately fund and implement sustainable water and greenhouse reductions programs, and I have publicly criticised their backwards approach to transport. I decided that without Greens in Council then there could be little positive change in these areas,” said Mr Peach.
