Bicycle safety on approaches to Green Bridge

071108_016_red_2The Greens are concerned about an accident waiting to happen with bicycle approaches and exits to and from the Eleanor Schonell Bridge from Dutton Park to the University of Queensland.  Cars are travelling at quite high speeds on Gladstone Road and represent a serious threat to cyclists.

Woonerf needed in the Gabba

Woonerf_2 The Greens would try to introduce the Dutch concept of woonerf to some Brisbane streets if their candidates are elected in the Brisbane City Council elections next March.

Greens candidate for The Gabba said he believed the practice, common in Europe and North America, prioritised pedestrians over cars in certain streets and structured those streets accordingly.

Greens Challenge Newman & ALP to Bring Forward Funding of Brisbane Walking and Cycling Plan

10 December 2007 Greens say  "His free bike hire if sponsors come forward an insult."

Today Campbell Newman announced that he hopes to get an European free bike  hire system going for short trips but only if supported by sponsors and advertisers.
Newman noted that cycling is a healthy alternative that does not create any Greenhouse Gas emissions.

Earlier this year Ms Bragg challenged the Mayor to travel to work by clean non car transport 4 days a week, something she has done for over 15 years as a busy lawyer in Sydney and Brisbane. His office brushed the challenge aside and said he needed to drive his car everyday.

Meanwhile, the Greens also want to see so-called clean transport prioritised and want improved pathways and cycle ways to key locations.

The party's lord mayoral candidate, Jo Bragg, has also proposed a major $3.7 billion light rail network connecting the inner city with outer-northern and southern suburbs.
