Scrooge Newman tells us to change our light bulbs: Bah, Humbug! What about fixing public transport?
30 November 2007
Today the Lord Mayor Campbell Newman urged us all to change our Christmas light bulbs to save greenhouse gas emissions. This was part of his $670,000 Greenheart advertising campaign.
Ms Jo Bragg, Greens Lord Mayoral candidate had earlier criticised the $670,000 of advertising expenditure on this campaign. While citizens have a role to play in saving greenhouse gas emissions, they prefer Council's limited funds spent on desperately needed cycle ways, pedestrian improvements and public transport. The Transport sector is responsible for around 15% of Brisbane's Greenhouse gas emissions.
Ms Bragg said today
"Passenger cars alone pump out 10% of
Brisbane's Greenhouse gas emissions and Newman encourages this by
building tunnels and bridges and last year cancelling the Coronation
Drive transit lane. Newman is Mr Scrooge telling us to change our light
bulbs while actively encouraging the massive and growing greenhouse gas
emissions from passenger cars."
Ms Bragg continued, "For Christmas, Brisbane families want a working public transport system so they can help slash greenhouse gas emissions. And funds spent on clean cycle ways and pedestrian improvements for our growing families, not a congestion nightmare that is unsafe for our children. When will Scrooge Newman see the light?"
